Note: Toxic substances lead to hemorrhagic damage due to increased blood flow, a compensatory
mechanism that attempts to increase oxygen delivery.  
Ischemic injury was found in the same
brainstem sites of monkeys subjected to asphyxia.  Compare figure 2 in the paper by Vortmeyer et al.
above with the ischemic damage of the inferior colliculi on p79 of the paper by
Windle (1969).
