Clamping a pulsating umbilical cord was widely criticized in the 1940s and 50s

By the 1960s clamping the cord immediately after birth was a widespread, although this
practice still had many critics.

By the 1970s immediate clamping of the cord seemed to be the norm in academic
settings, where research was often conducted on "delayed" compared to "immediate"
clamping of the cord.
